Flea Market Finds: Grill Magnet

The flea market was on again this week, thanks to the great weather we've been having. Could this outdoor venue continue into DECEMBER? Only time will tell...

So this little grill is a magnet, although we both know that it's unlikely it will be used that way in this household. The cover lifts up to reveal a couple of kebabs, a hamburger and a hotdog.

IM coMIx Puppets ('R' Dog and 'M' Cat)

Once again, I've been a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad girl and have not posted in far too long, but here are two recently crafted puppets. You may, if you've read my blog in the past, recognize these guys from my IM coMIx postings. If not, you can poke on the category "comix" to read all their conversations with each other.

These puppets were fun to make, as I was using my own illustrations as jumping-off places. They were created using a combination of wet felting and needle felting. Their glasses' ear pieces made from black paper clips, and their 'letter tags' are made from the type of beads typically used in making baby bracelets. 'R' Dog's paintbrush was from an earlier project.

Another Exciting Adventure starring Me, My Car, & Mapquest

Last night I went to a "special homecoming screening" of a feature film documentary, Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist.

Will Eisner (1917-2005) was a giant in the comic book world, and was the guy who coined the term "graphic novel" and "sequential art".

The documentary was directed/co-produced by Andrew D. Cooke, and written/co-produced by his brother, Jon B. Cooke (with whom I took a RISD CE comic book class).

They did a fantastic job with this film -- masterfully organizing drawings, photos, film clips, and audio- and videotaped interviews so that the story of a brilliant storyteller could shine through. Many other comic book greats were interviewed, which proved what an influential impact Eisner's career had on so many others.

This film not only paints a portrait of one man, but also gives as its contextual backdrop: the history of comics & comic books. So, can you tell? -- I liked it a lot!

Seeing this documentary is pretty timely, as the movie The Spirit (perhaps Eisner's best-known creation), is slated to hit the theaters Christmas Day. Frank Miller (Sin City), who is interviewed in the documentary, will be directing this major motion picture.

The documentary was screened at the Courthouse Center for the Arts (really nifty place) in West Kingston, RI. This should give you some indication of how passionate about graphic novels I've been of late: I traveled 1.5 hours (round-trip), to a place I've never been before, IN THE DARK, just to see this film.

And it sooooooo was worth it --  thanks for the invitation, Jon!

IM coMIx (fun with artists)

In this episode of little guys talkin', it may behoove you to know that RISD = Rhode Island School of Design, my alma mater. (And remember: if you don't alma, it doesn't mater.) And, by extension, a "risdoid" is someone who is a student/alum of RISD. You have been enlightened.

Turns out there were more computer problems than I'd bargained for.
(Does anyone ever bargain for problems? Probably not.)
I am now on my third mother board in as many years.
I'm not gentle with my toys.
Nor with my big expensive office equipment.
Anyway, to make up for the week's silence, here is a nice long Li'l GuysTalkin' for you.

This week's installment of Little Guys Talkin' features costume changes, broad theatrical expressions, interactivity with a web link, Photoshop tips, and an homage to a favorite breakfast cereal character.
In short, it is all things to all people.
It exemplifies what I wish this blog to be: a big warm hug from a complete stranger.
A complete stranger who is more than a little sweaty.

So I'm coloring up this little Instant Message conversation that includes HAIL as one of its subjects, right?
All of a sudden, the sky turns dark and it starts HAILING with a vengeance, so I took pix of the aftermath, above. The storm didn't last too long, but, boy, was it ferocious there for a little bit! My studio has a tin roof, so it sounded like the end of the world as we know it, but I feel fine.
