1st Page of a *NEW* Sketchbook!

Suitguy001

Well, it's like it says: it's the 1st page of a new sketchbook. And I guess I've grown weary of painting Girls in Dresses, so instead I drew a Guy in a Suit. I'm not very creative, am I?

Oh, yeah, I photoshopped in the checkered background.

Illustration Friday -- PARADE

What could possibly be better than a bunch of garden-fresh veggies marching straight into your boca?
(Don't choke on their glasses & shoes. That could ruin your dining experience.)

Veggieparadeopt

This illo was done a while back for a kid's book on gardening, which is probably outta print by now.
I DID, however, color it up for you TODAY, so don't touch -- it's still wet.

Hidden Pix Puzzle, Colored

Hiddenfoodcolor

The final step to the illustration: COLOR!
Click on to see larger.
The texture-y areas of the tree and the ground chunks were created using a combination of gradation & various distort filters in Photoshop. Did this as a layer mask.
As a reminder, the food items you're looking for are: apple, chicken leg, cupcake, donut, egg, hamburger, ice cream cone, pizza, sandwich, waffle. If you find all 10, reach around & pat yourself on the back. Arms not long enough? Ask a friend or family member for help.

Hidden Pix Puzzle, Inked

Hiddenfoodink

Here is the illustration from the last post, now inked.
The way I do any project is: do all sketches; send to editor/art director; await approval; ink all; scan all; line correct all; color all; burn a disk; Fedex cd along with invoice, signed purchase order, printed color samples, etc.
For this piece I will also have to provide an answer page, so I'll simply make a copy of this file with just the black lines, and plop in red into the hidden food items so they stand out like big sore thumbs.

Anatomy of a Hidden Pix Puzzle

 Hiddensketch

Sometimes it's interesting to see a sketch for an illustration.
(Let's hope that's the case here.)
(Click on image to see it larger.)

Hidden in this to-be autumnal scene are the following: chicken leg, hamburger, egg, pizza, ice cream cone, cupcake, donut, waffle, apple, sandwich.
In creating this, not only did I have to think about how to use shapes, I also had to consider the colors that these food items would need to be. For example: I can't change the chicken leg to RED to suit my purposes -- it needs to remain in the tan range.

The outlined boxy shapes are where the type will go.

The two outer boundary lines mean:
Inner line: cut line, meaning that's the actual size of the printed page -- keep all yer important stuff inside this line!
Outer line: bleed line, meaning that your art needs to extend to this line, to take into account any inconsistencies in cutting.

Will show this piece in its other stages: inking & color!
